FED: GST on lamington drives says Swan
Queensland's opposition has called on the federal government to exempt charity fundraising
activities from the GST.
Opposition spokesman WAYNE SWAN says the Australian Taxation Office ruling that the
10 per cent GST will apply to fundraising efforts will shock the community.
He's told a news conference in Brisbane that the humble Lions Christmas Cake, Girl
Guide lamington drives and Guide Dog fundraising catalogues will all be targeted.
Mr SWAN, Labor's spokesman for Family and Community Services, says the tax office rulings
put Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD on a par with the mythical SCROOGE.
He says the news couldn't have come at worse time, right on Christmas when demand on
charitable organisations soars.
