Lt. Gov. Betsy McCaughey Ross has been summarily denied State Police protection. If she was ``abusing'' the services of the State Police assigned to guard her, as has been charged, someone -- perhaps the governor -- should have said, ``Don't do that.''
The whole trooper abuse affair, it seems to us, would then have been settled.
It is not even certain, however, that the lieutenant governor ever abused the services of the state police. Mrs. McCaughey Ross denies the allegations, and no one from the State Police has come forward publicly to accuse her of anything.
More probably, this is the latest episode in a tawdry little game to embarrass the …
